Pirate Ship, ShipStation, and Pitney Bowes SendPro all sell USPS Commercial Pricing labels. The rates are broadly similar. The differences are in what surrounds the labels โ€” subscription fees, workflow features, and who the tool is actually built for.

When Pirate Ship is the right call

Pirate Ship is built for the shipper who wants exactly one thing: cheap USPS and UPS labels with no monthly cost and no strings. If your workflow is essentially "sell an item, print a label, drop it off," Pirate Ship covers 100% of your needs at $0/month.

This fits almost every reseller doing under 500 packages a month. It also fits solo sellers who want to actually see and pick between USPS and UPS options on each shipment rather than have software auto-pick for them.

Hard TruthShipStation has convinced a lot of resellers that they need "shipping automation" โ€” but for most single-seller reselling businesses, that automation replaces a 30-second decision with a monthly bill. If you're shipping 20 packages a day from your kitchen table, you don't need workflow rules and multi-warehouse routing.

When ShipStation is worth the subscription

You're a multi-channel brand, not just a reseller

If you sell on eBay + Etsy + Shopify + your own website + Amazon FBM + Walmart, ShipStation's 150+ integrations pull orders from every source into one queue. Pirate Ship supports fewer integrations and doesn't queue as elegantly.

You need FedEx access

Pirate Ship doesn't sell FedEx labels at all. If FedEx Ground is your default for heavier items (some resellers prefer FedEx for large or oversized shipments), ShipStation gets you FedEx access alongside USPS and UPS.

You need automation rules and batch workflows

ShipStation lets you set "if the order is under 1 lb going to Zone 1โ€“3, use Ground Advantage automatically" and print 50 labels in one batch. Pirate Ship can also do batch printing via spreadsheet upload, but it's less elegant than ShipStation's rules engine.

You have employees or a warehouse team

Multi-user access, scan-to-verify, warehouse zones, pick lists โ€” ShipStation's higher tiers handle all of this. Pirate Ship doesn't.

When Pitney Bowes SendPro is a fit

SendPro is oriented toward small businesses that need both package shipping and office mail management โ€” meters, letter tracking, business mail merges, etc. For pure reselling, it's usually overkill and more expensive than the alternatives.

Where it shines: if you already lease Pitney Bowes equipment for other business functions or want a unified vendor for physical mail and packages, SendPro rounds out the stack.

Real-world comparison on the same 5 lb package

1 lb Ground Advantage to Zone 5:

On the label itself, the rates are broadly comparable across all three since they all use USPS Commercial Pricing. What you're actually deciding is whether the software features justify the subscription.

Pro TipShipStation charges its monthly fee regardless of shipment volume. If you ship 20 packages/month at $9.99 subscription, that's $0.50 in overhead per package โ€” enough to erase most of the Commercial Pricing savings vs going straight to USPS.com. Volume matters. ShipStation makes sense at 300+ shipments/month, roughly.

What about Shippo, EasyShip, or Stamps.com?

Shippo

Positioned as a Pirate Ship competitor for small businesses. Pay-as-you-go pricing (starts at 5ยข per label on top of postage) or $19/mo Professional. For pure reselling, Pirate Ship's free tier beats Shippo on cost with similar core features.

EasyShip

Focused on international ecommerce, especially cross-border. If most of your sales ship internationally to 20+ countries, EasyShip's tax/duty/customs tooling is genuinely useful. For domestic-heavy resellers, overkill.

Stamps.com

The OG online postage service. Charges $19.99/mo for a subscription that gets you rates comparable to Pirate Ship's free tier. Historically bundled with hardware sales. There's no reason for a modern reseller to pay for Stamps.com when Pirate Ship exists.

The decision framework

The FixStart with Pirate Ship (free, no risk). If you hit specific limits โ€” need FedEx, need to manage multi-user warehouse workflows, need to pull orders from 6+ platforms โ€” evaluate ShipStation. Skip everything else unless you have a very specific reason (SendPro for combined office + shipping ops).

The trap of paying for features you don't use

Hard TruthEvery reseller who pays $30/month for ShipStation "just in case they need it later" is subsidizing that decision at $360/year. Over 5 years, that's $1,800 in fees for a workflow that a free tool would have covered.
The FixPay for shipping software when you have a specific problem the free tool can't solve. Not before.
Recommended Gear

Rollo Thermal Label Printer (USB)

Works with all three platforms (Pirate Ship, ShipStation, SendPro). No ink, 4ร—6 thermal labels, prints in under 3 seconds. The one shipping upgrade that pays for itself regardless of which software you land on.
