The three tiers of USPS pricing
USPS has three pricing tiers, and where you buy your postage determines which one you pay:
- Retail Pricing — what you pay at the Post Office counter or usps.com directly. The most expensive tier.
- Commercial Pricing — traditionally reserved for shippers moving 50,000+ packages/year. Available through commercial software like Pirate Ship, ShipStation, and eBay's label system.
- USPS Connect eCommerce — a newer discount tier launched in 2022 that's cheaper than Commercial Pricing on many services. Available through Pirate Ship and select partners.

Where Pirate Ship wins by a mile
Priority Mail Cubic
USPS.com and Click-N-Ship don't offer Priority Mail Cubic to retail customers. It's a commercial-only service. If you ship dense, small items (books, jewelry with weight, coins, dense electronics), Cubic pricing can save $3–$8 per shipment vs weight-based Priority — and it's only accessible through commercial platforms like Pirate Ship.
Heavier packages on longer zones
The savings gap widens with weight and zone. On a 10 lb package to Zone 8, Pirate Ship can be $10+ cheaper than the Post Office counter. On a 20 lb package cross-country, the difference can hit $15+.
International shipments
USPS.com's international rates run about 15% higher than what Pirate Ship's Simple Export Rate charges for eligible packages under 4 lb. On a 1 lb international shipment, you'll typically save $3–$5.
The two times going USPS-direct actually makes sense
1. You need First-Class Mail letters or flats (not packages)
Pirate Ship only sells package labels. If you're mailing an envelope, a card, or a flat non-machinable item that goes at letter/flat rates, you need actual stamps or USPS.com's stamp-purchase tool. Trading cards under 3 oz that qualify for eBay Standard Envelope are the reseller exception here — buy those through eBay Labels.
2. You need Registered Mail or specialty services
Registered Mail (for high-value insured items), Certified Mail, Return Receipt, and a handful of other specialty services aren't available on Pirate Ship. If you're shipping something that legally requires Registered Mail or a signature confirmation Pirate Ship doesn't sell, go to the counter.
Does using Pirate Ship affect my USPS pickup?
No. USPS provides free daily package pickup regardless of where you bought the label. Schedule pickups on Pirate Ship or usps.com — either works. Your regular mail carrier grabs any packages left at your door during normal delivery, no extra fee.
What about eBay Labels?

Assume you currently buy labels at USPS.com and ship 50 packages a month averaging $2 in savings per package if you switched to Pirate Ship. That's $100/month, $1,200/year — for filling out a signup form. Even at 20 packages/month, you're leaving $500+/year on the table.
