Fixing Stuck Zippers: The Wax Method (and Other Quick Fixes)

April 3, 2026 · 11 min read

A stuck zipper on a $60 jacket drops the resale to $20 — or kills the sale entirely. But most zipper issues take 30 seconds to fix. Here's how.

The Wax Method (Works 80% of the Time)

Run a plain wax candle, crayon, or bar of soap along both sides of the zipper teeth. Work the slider up and down gently. The wax lubricates the teeth and usually frees a stuck zipper immediately. Graphite pencil also works — run the pencil tip along the teeth.

Slider Won't Close the Teeth

If the zipper separates behind the slider, the slider opening has widened. Use pliers to gently squeeze the back of the slider — just enough to narrow the gap. Don't over-squeeze or you'll lock it completely. Test after each tiny squeeze.

Missing Zipper Pull

A missing pull tab doesn't affect function but kills presentation. Replacement pulls are available in bulk packs for pennies each. A quick swap with a small keyring or purpose-built pull makes the zipper look complete.

When to Skip the Repair

If the actual zipper teeth are broken, bent, or missing — that's a full zipper replacement, which means a tailor ($15-$30). Only worth it on items selling for $60+. For cheaper items, disclose "zipper needs repair" and price accordingly.

Pro Tip: Test every zipper before buying at the thrift store. A stuck zipper you can fix = profit opportunity everyone else passes on. Broken teeth = leave it. This 5-second check is part of the sourcing sweep.
